Find OER

This site has been developed as a guide to help faculty, instructional designers, and all staff who work in developing and supporting courses at Penn State – adopting, adapting, and authoring OER. We have designed this site in hopes that it will be utilized as an easy to use resource where you can quickly find what you are looking for. This section focuses on obtaining the materials you need. Featured below are expandable sections with links to repositories of OER material.

Textbooks
  • BC Campus OpenEd Open textbooks for the 40 highest enrolled first- and second-year subject areas in the British Columbia’s public, post-secondary system.

Course Materials

A great place to begin searching for open course materials is in OER Course Repositories. The following list contains resources that are free to use but the usage rights vary so please do pay close attention to the Creative Commons License.

  • Openstax CNX (formerly Connexions) Textbooks, articles, supplements, and other learning resources that can be read online or downloaded for free.
  • MERLOT II Free, peer reviewed collection of online teaching and learning materials maintained by the California State University System.
  • OASIS, SUNY Geneseo’s Milne Library’s search tool, searches open content from 117 different sources and contains 388,707 records.
Media

Check out the Creative Commons Search for all media types.

Creative Commons Search

Use this multimedia search engine to find various types of CC licensed items from sources such as Google Images, Fotopedia, Jamendo, Flickr and more. They also have a community-built and maintained Content Directory that features hundreds of media resources from around the world and in a variety of different subject areas.

Video

The A/V Geeks Film Archive is an ephemeral film collection curated by Skip Elsheimer. What started as a hobby more than ten years is now a lifetime commitment. His collection has grown to over 24,000 films gathered from school auctions, thrift stores, closets and dumpsters. The Archive features old civil defense & public service films shot by the government in the 40′s & 50′s.
