Jackie’s Story: Moving From Published Textbook to the Creation of an Open Adapted Textbook Hosted in Pressbooks

Dr. Schwab has been collaborating with TLT  for a number of years. She was a past participant of TLT’s  Blended Learning Transformation program and was selected as an adpation grant award winner for ACT@PSU round one. She is very dedicated to ensuring her students have a positive experience in all of the courses she teaches. Jackie was selected as the 2018 Outstanding Faculty Member at the Mont Alto Campus.

The book she had been using went out of print. She was first introduced to Open Educational Resources by her campus librarian Tom Reinsfelder, Reference and Instruction Librarian & Associate Librarian. When Jackie got in touch with with Julie Lang, OER Coordinator,  to discuss Open Educational Resources to replace it she was well prepared with a number of open and library resources thanks to Tom. Jackie was trying to figure out how to utilize the materials that Tom had helped her locate in the most pedagogically sound way possible. Julie and Jackie discussed the possibility of submitting a proposal for ACT@PSU Round One in the adaption track. Jackie agreed that having instructional design and librarian support provided by ACT would prove helpful in replacing her textbook.

When asked about her experience in the first round of ACT@PSU, Jackie Schwab shared that “for the first couple months I felt this project was way over my head and I struggled with figuring out what to do. With the guidance and assistance of the instructional designers the pieces started to fall into place to the point that I am enjoying creating my Pressbook and learning new skills all the time.”
Schwab selected her Drugs, Behavior, and Health (BBH 143) course to revise which she teaches at Penn State Mont Alto for her Adaptation project. She explains “this project is comprehensive as it includes course design, finding and creating content, learning about copyright and open resources, creating the book with accessibility in mind, and learning how to embed interactive components into the online textbook. I had no idea how many open educational resources are available!”
We are looking forward to hearing more about Jackie’s project from students that were able to have a zero cost textbook for this Fall 2018 offering of BBH 143.  Jackie will be working with the ACT@PSU support team to complete an Evidence of Impact website so please check back towards the end of the Fall semester to learn more about this adaption project.
